Army set to deploy its new APCs

The army will deploy 42 armoured vehicles newly purchased from South Africa in the restive South by early June, an army source said yesterday. The source said the armoured vehicles costing US$310,000, or around 10 million baht each, will be sent to military units in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat.

Specialised aircraft to be deployed in 2010

It took a decade to fulfil its dream, but the air force is now set to equip its fleet with an airborne early warning (AEW) plane, although it will be a second-hand one. The first AEW aircraft built by Saab of Sweden will be deployed in 2010, about a year ahead of delivery of the first batch of Gripen C/D jets, according to an air force source.

US gets permission to fly aid into Burma

Burma’s government has given the US military permission to fly in relief supplies for survivors of Cyclone Nargis, Thai Supreme Commander Boonsrang Niumpradit has told Reuters.

Coral Reef Squadron red-flagged
PHUKET CITY: The sinking of 10 decommissioned military aircraft – nicknamed the Coral Reef Squadron – to create Thailand’s largest artificial reef has been postponed until November, Tourism Authority of Thailand South Region 4 Office Director Suwalai Pinpradub announced today.
